Flows on the Truckee River have held steady around 430 cfs through the Reno gauge. Recent storms have caused bumps in the flow, but overall the river has been in great shape. Temperatures on the river have also remained the same, starting the day below 60 degrees and ending the day near 68. Conditions are looking great for the end of summer and fall fishing on our river.
As is typical for this time of year, the bugs have gotten smaller. We are fishing size #16-#20 flies have seen trico mayflies, midges, and other small mayfly , such as pale morning dun hatching. We are already looking ahead to some great fall fishing and some late season hatches.
Crayfish patterns will be a good selection until the water temps consistently fall below 55F. Trout are always looking out for juvenile crayfish as a large prey item but it seems these warmer late summer months the larger varieties are around in higher numbers and the trout really key in on them. When we have specifically targeting larger trout we have switched to medium sized streamers like the D&D, Barely Legal and Cheech Leech. We have also found trout with small streamers (Thin Mint and Belly Ache Minnow) and emerging nymphs/pupa (Birds Nest). These have been effective when representing young trout and other bait fish in the system.
It has been a few years since we have had, and will have such great conditions Late into the year. This is a perfect time to take an introduction to fly fishing class, or get out on the water with one of our guides to lessen the water and hone your skills. We are also not far off from the Pyramid Lake opener in October and have already begun booking trips.
Flies We Suggest: Perdigon, Micro Mayfly, Hot Butt, Carot, Duracell, Coppertop, Tunghead Stone, Mini Crayfish, Zebra Midge, Daniels Polar Jig, Silverfish
